A Meal That Matters

2015 State College Area Meals on Wheels benefit dinner

Making a difference in the community is an important part of what we at Juniper Village do each and every day. Not only do we believe in nurturing the spirit of life in our own residents, but also in the residents of the greater State College community. This is why a number of Juniper Village at Brookline associates were proud to represent our organization at the 10th annual State College Area Meals on Wheels (SCMOW) benefit dinner. As the longest-running corporate supporter of SCMOW, and the only platinum-level sponsor, JVB associates were treated to front row seating at the event and the opportunity to meet keynote speaker and Penn State football head coach, James Franklin.

Since 1971, SCMOW has served more than a million meals, and is now able to serve meals three times per week to those in the State College Area School District. According to SCMOW Board President, Bill Haner, the total amount raised at this year's dinner is slated to be between $45,000 and $50,000, which will tie or exceed the organization's record fundraising amount!

May 2015 Events in State College, PA: Grow Strong Daily

Fitness is on our mind during our May 2015 events in State College, PA at Juniper Village at Brookline Wellspring with our Alive In All Seasons theme “Grow Strong Daily”. As you know, physical activity is good for you both physically and mentally. Regular physical activity can help you to continue to do the things you love and stay independent as you age. Exercise can reduce the risk of developing some diseases and reduce symptoms of some chronic conditions such as arthritis, heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and balance issues.

But, if exercise has not been a part of your daily routine how do you take that first step? Start by making it fun! Turn a walk around the block into a scavenger hunt – search for daffodils, birds, squirrels or lucky pennies. Instead of a dip in the pool, create an adventure as you pretend to swim with the dolphins. Rather than send your co-worker an email, walk to her office and communicate face to face, double the benefit with a smile! What’s important is to make it fun and just start – today!

Join us for our May 2015 events in State College, PA at Juniper Village at Brookline Wellspring as we will Grow Strong Daily with Fitness Five, and walk “cross country” with our Route 66 Walking Program and learn more about keeping our hearts fit at our Healthy Heart Luncheon. We look forward to sharing these and many other activities with you this month. Peruse this month’s calendar, and we will see you soon!

Our fabulous May 2015 events in State College, PA at Juniper Village at Brookline Wellspring include our:

§  Learn About Spanish 101 Seminar to strengthen our ability to communicate with one another in a foreign language on May 5th at 6:30 pm.
§  Jazzy Jewelry Junction an opportunity to pick up a last minute gift for your mom or perhaps the mother of your children on May 8th at 2:00 pm.
§  Golden Chair Zumba and Healthy Parfaits for a little heart healthy exercise and tasty treats on May 21st at 2:00 pm.

We hope to see you at one or more of our May 2015 events in State College, PA at Juniper Village at Brookline Wellspring!

Come On Down for An Evening of FUN and Prizes!!

Okay… so we didn’t technically win any prizes this time around, but we sure did have a ton of fun when “The Price Is Right LIVE” made a stop at Penn State’s Bryce Jordan Center! More than 20 JVB residents and associates were part of the audience to watch as contestants played PLINKO, spun the Big Wheel, and had a Showcase Showdown. And as you can see, everyone was sporting their “Nurturing the Spirit of Fun” T-shirts (and some necklaces, and headbands, and pom-poms)! There was dancing in the aisles, applause, and lots and lots of laughter!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SYLVIA!

Wellspring had a very special birthday! Not to say that all of the other birthdays aren’t special, but our friend Sylvia was celebrating her 100th birthday with  a smile! This was a photo taken (04/21/15) as we sat down with Wellspring friends and staff to joke around while enjoying light snack and refreshments as we sang Happy Birthday wishes to the birthday gal! Looking fabulous as she is wearing her favorite color, Sylvia is an outstanding individual and we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to share this photo of a very special gal on a very special day.

Juniper Village at Brookline: Soundtrack of Your Life with Music and Memory Program

The sound of silence is loud.
Well not silence, exactly. There’s an alarm going off at Juniper Village at Brookline — Wellspring Memory Care, a shrill, monotone and very public reminder that not all doors are made to be walked through.
Nobody seems very concerned, as if this is the kind of mistake that just happens from time to time, the kind of ambient noise that comes as naturally to this type of environment as a ringing phone or a squeaky wheelchair.
Nestled comfortably in a rocking chair, 87-year-old resident Mary Garcia seems particularly unperturbed. A slender pair of earbuds have carried her far, far away from the persistent wailing that grounds everyone else firmly in the small office.
Kaitlin Hoover, connections director at Juniper Village at Brookline Wellspring, holds both Garcia’s hand and the pink iPod Shuffle at the other end of the earbuds. This has been a demonstration of the facility’s Music & Memory initiative, a program implemented in October that has quickly become a crucial component in the daily routines of residents like Garcia.
“If she doesn’t get her music at 4 p.m., it sends her on a rampage,” Hoover says.
The facility rotates five sets of iPods and headphones among 34 residents. Each resident has a personalized playlist, a musical itinerary carefully cultivated from questionnaires, family members and caretakers’ individual knowledge of each of their charges.
Back in her rocker, Garcia sings along to a Spanish melody, a reminder of her late husband. She lets out a tiny sigh of recognition and tears glisten in her eyes. Being anchored to the past has helped her find clarity in the present.
Music has always had a powerful presence in Garcia’s life and she enjoyed sharing it with others. She taught her niece, Karen Wertz, how to play the piano at a young age.
Wertz continues to visit her aunt at Juniper Village at Brookline, and while she’s not sure that the music on Garcia’s iPod restores her memories to full luster, she says she thinks it brings back something positive for her.
“It just brightens her up,” Wertz said.
Precisely when this bright spot occurs varies from day to day. The iPods are typically deployed closer to the evening, but if a resident becomes agitated, caregivers may decide to cue the music — which in some cases can reduce a patient’s reliance on psychotropic drugs.

The epidemic of rioting seniors isn’t just a local phenomenon. Founded by Dan Cohen, Music & Memory is a national nonprofit organization that trains elder care professionals in the use of digital music technology, creating personalized playlists for people suffering from cognitive ailments like dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.
According to the nonprofit’s web page, music is intricately connected with long-term memory. Familiar melodies and lyrics can calm chaotic brain activity and trigger long-dormant recollections or associated experiences.
