The Alzheimer’s Foundation of America believes that when used
appropriately, “music can shift mood, manage stress-induced agitation,
stimulate positive interactions, facilitate cognitive function, and coordinate
motor movements” in those with dementia. Shawna Mitchell, Wellspring
connections associate could not agree more. A recent graduate of Slippery Rock
University of Pennsylvania, Shawna earned her degree in music therapy and
discovered her love of working with the geriatric population while completing her
clinical studies at a skilled nursing community. Her main goals at Wellspring
include decreasing resident anxiety, and working to showcase just how
individuals benefit from musical therapies.
Shawna enjoys sharing a wide variety of music with “the amazing
residents”, and shares that she enjoys coming to work every day to implement
the knowledge she gained in school. “The gift of music is such a powerful
thing,” she said. “It truly is a universal language and it is my pleasure to
share that beauty”.
